The Kidpower Children's Safety Comics presents the core skills of the Kidpower personal safety program in an easy-to-use and easy-to-teach format. The short lessons address a variety of safety skills and issues, including Checking First to be Safe, Healthy Boundaries, the Kidpower Consent Checklist and Rules for Touch, How to Protect Your Feelings from Hurting Words, Making a Safety Plan, and more. I am proud to have been part of Kidpower for more than 15 years and this is a great introduction, because the comic book gives parents and other caregiving adults the framework to teach and practice these skills with kids. The basic skills can be applied to the specific events, situations and settings of each family's life, as well as adapting for different ages or abilities.
Our kids wanted to read the stories to us and I was pleased to see all the valuable safety information presented in a simple, clear way throughout the story. The comic book format was a hit and my kids were able to identify with many of the stories and said things like, "That happened to me!" It gave an opening for us to discuss these safety issues as a family and talk about where are the places we can get help if needed.
These social stories have helped my son with Asperger’s and his typically developing sister solve problems and build friendships.
Each page gives examples of what to do and not do with your words and your body to stop problems my kids are facing — and to get help when they can’t solve it themselves.
These comics are fun for kids to read and I love that they are learning about how to stay safe. Well worth the money.
